Helen Martino
- By training and inclination I was a functional potter,
making mainly domestic wares on the wheel. However, following a time of change
in my life and family I have come to handbuilding, using soft and flexible
sheets of clay.
- This is an ideal medium for more personal expression.
Usually the form still refer to function, whilst being free to exist in their
own right. The surfaces are freely painted in coloured slips and are sometimes
gilded. Over the last 3 years the inspiration for this work has ranged from
coffins, boats, sails, string quartets and birds to gravestones.
- At present I am playing with light and shadow and
perspective in my work.
- I exhibit mainly in East Anglia through CCA Gallery and
more functional work at All Saint's Gardens Craft Market.
