Anglian Potters

Juliet Gorman

I make my work using traditional hand building techniques with slab building dominating. All the work is smoke fired. Influences of Africa are evident in the work I do and I like to bring a contemporary interpretation to it. I concentrate on vases, but diverge into lamps, dishes and recently, figures of women. All the work is reliant on simple forms that will complement the patterns and marks I which to apply to enrich the effects of the smoke firing.

Commissioned work is undertaken after consultation work the client and is always a welcoming change.

The earthenware clays used are 'T' material normally buff or hand building material. In addition I use Limoges porcelain. Dried work is biscuit fired to 960 C in an electric kiln. Smoke firing is carried out either in dustbins or a brick kiln using newspaper and/or sawdust.

Curriculum Vitae

At Bath Academy of Art I obtained a Diploma of Art & Design, specializing in ceramics. I also have a Diploma of Art Teaching from Cardiff University and a Diploma of Interior Design from Rhodec International.

Having finished my studies I went into full time secondary art teaching and taught some adult classes in the evening. The dream of giving up work and setting up my own studio seemed far away, but eventually it was achieved.

I am a member of Craft Council National Register of Makers, Craft Potters Association, Cambridge Open Studios and Selected Member Anglia Potters.
